SUNDAY VIBE
So I was in a cab today, I was going out of school with a friend of mine.
She was meant to drop before me. So as she was about dropping, she gave the cab man 60 naira in place of the 50 naira it was meant to be. The cab man didn’t have change so he dismissed her. The other passengers started complaining against the cab man accusing cab drivers of always withholding people’s change. One lady in front spoke more strongly than the rest, not giving the cab man time to explain. I personally wasn’t interested in this exchange till the cab man said something that caught my attention.
“Stop talking. You are a lady.” I wasn’t sure whether this statement annoyed or humbled me. I’m guessing it humbled me. This here was a man who understood the meaning of gender roles.
I know the talk about whether or not there should be gender equality and as to what and what not are the gender roles, I’m going to take this example out and explain at least a gender role.
Now, as this cab man said what he said, I started thinking; is it that this man wanted to be the only one talking or what? The thought off it was appalling. Then I got to understand that, it was quite frankly un lady like to be raising your voice when a man, or someone else was talking. If we ladies actually took our time and break the status quo of always being so haughty and took our time to listen to the voice of reason. That is, calm down and let the other party talk before drawing our conclusions. I believe if this is done, most of the problems we have in life presently won’t be problems. I know sometimes it might seem like they don’t know what they are saying, and you are indeed of course of better understanding, but for peace’s sake; calm down and listen.
Now, this doesn’t only apply to just ladies, it applies to everybody. But ladies more so because it is our role as the female gender to be meek. Listen first before making inferences and acting out of wit.
